Bookended by Richard Strauss’s Horn Concerto and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8, three 12st Century works blend seamlessly with the program. Stacy Garrop’s instrumental version and vision of “Lo Yisa Goy” - a Jewish song and prayer for peace – is followed by Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s “Chokfi’”, a work inspired by his American Indian heritage and culture. Combined with Craig Hanemann’s world premiere “The Grand”, Jones Auditorium will resonate with classical music old and new.

All About That Brass showcases the brass and percussion sections of your Fayetteville Symphony, presented in the beautiful and intimate setting of St. John’s Episcopal Church. Our program features some of the very best repertoire written for brass and percussion. Selections include a movement from Eric Ewazen’s joyful Symphony in Brass, music of Giovanni Gabrieli (the originator of the brass ensemble in the 16th Century), as well as 20th century masterpieces by Samuel Barber and Dmitri Shostakovich. The program culminates with the epic Fanfares Liturgiques, a powerful four movement work by the French composer, Henri Tomasi, written in 1947. Join us for this journey through time with the mighty Fayetteville Symphony brass!

North Carolina Opera presents a new production of LA BOHÈME, with sets designed by Steven Kemp.
The idea of “bohemian life” – that of young people in the city, living their lives, and freed from any constraints of tradition, family, religion (or money!) – has bewitched audiences from the beginning. LA BOHÈME is the opera that won Puccini’s international reputation. His gifts of characterization, atmosphere, and dramatic pacing were ideally suited to this already-popular story of young love in Paris. At the premiere in 1896 the critics didn’t care for it, but the voice of the public soon overwhelmed them. Whether it is the irresistible love of Mimì and Rodolfo, the good-natured quarrels of Marcello and Musetta, the witty repartee among the roommates, or the excitement of the Latin Quarter on Christmas Eve, every part of LA BOHÈME is a delight.

Harriet Tubman may be the best-known conductor of the Underground Railroad, but a new piece highlights another key figure: William Still, who helped nearly 800 enslaved African Americans escape to freedom in the years before the Civil War. Widely recognized for his efforts as an abolitionist, historian and conductor for the Underground Railroad, Still is the central figure of SANCTUARY ROAD, by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Paul Moravec.

Is this just fantasy or is the Fayetteville Symphony playing Queen? We are excited to bring you Bohemian Rhapsody, a concert that will feature masterpieces from Queen, Brahms, Dvorak, and Smetana. Brahms’ Hungarian Dance No. 5 and Dvorak’s Slavonic Dance Op. 72, No. 2 will have you tapping your feet along to the music, and Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody might have you singing along. The concert will conclude with Dvorak’s Cello Concerto featuring the Fayetteville Symphony’s own Nate Leyland as soloist. Dvorak’s Cello Concerto is one of the greatest concertos of all time, hi-lighting Dvorak’s gift for incorporating folk music into the richness of his orchestrations, juxtaposed against the rhapsodic lyricism and incredible expressive range of the cello. We can’t wait to see you for this very special performance!

The legendary fairy tale of Snow White comes to life in Zalman Raffael’s latest creation, complete with new sets, costumes and of course … the seven of them!
For this long-awaited balletic interpretation of Snow White, Raffael has collaborated again with the award-winning Shinji Eshima—composer of Carolina Ballet’s emotionally moving Bariolage from September 2019—to create a uniquely different musical score. Be sure to bring the whole family as Raffael’s imaginative new story ballet to Eshima’s innovative music will not disappoint!

From Stage to Screen is the final subscription concert of the 2021-2022 season. Our program features composers that began their careers writing for the concert stage only to evolve into some of the greatest composers for the silver screen. You may recognize Nino Rota’s Waltz and Love Theme from The Godfather, or Max Steiner’s theme from the 1959 film, A Summer Place. Also featured on the program is music by the beloved 20th Century Russian composer, Serge Prokofiev, and his suite from the film Lt. Kijé. Join us this spring as we take you From Stage to Screen!

For the final concert of the season, 170 voices of the Symphonic Choir perform Mozart’s sacred choral masterpiece Vesperae solennes de confessore, K. 339 with chamber orchestra. They will be joined by the NCMC Youth Choir for the beautiful “Laudate Dominum” movement. This season finale will also feature a 60-voice ensemble and soloists performing Handel’s Dixit Dominus, as well as Mozart’s spirited Regina Coeli, K. 276 performed by the Youth Choir.

Tailored to the unique space at Burning Coal Theatre, earspace performs Per Nørgård's Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking interspersed amidst works by modern innovators Kate Moore and Carolyn Chen and 20th-century master, Alberto Ginastera.
The highlight of the performance will be the newly-commissioned multimedia work se consume by Luis Fernando Amaya, a rising star of a composer and percussionist from Aguascalientes, México. The work is inspired by a viral video of a young boy in Mexico engaged in a rap battle who, instead of attacking his opponent, raps that “The world is being consumed by money…” Amaya says “this piece is an homage to MC Dinero, [the rapper in the viral video], and his very particular way of voicing the collective imaginary—even if inadvertently.” Carolina Vélez Muñiz is designing the video elements of the work.Carolina described herself as "a weaver, collager, dancer, creator processing her surroundings, family histories, traditions, and experiences. She plays with what scares her."
